A Kind of Machine
BFA Thesis Exhibition
2018
This project employs a prescribed design process to create a body of procedurally-generated work, engaging with questions of authority and authorship by exploring how the roles of the creator and audience would change if all thought and planning was separated from the final moment of creation. What if all of the thought and planning happened exclusively before the design phase started, like planning a road trip?
I collected a database of over 350 text and image elements, brought together by repeating 14 written processes. Some were created by others (take a drawing tool from this bag, then in 5 seconds draw “chaos”). Some were gathered online (using the Wikipedia race, take a sentence from each article that was visited to get from point A to B) I then generated a series of posters using a repeated method which randomly selected these elements and placed them in a preset layout. The final installation included a display of the posters, a mural compiling sections of the posters, printed guides explaining the process, and a process book documenting the entire project.
